We support students to become successful in all aspects of life, both in terms of academic success and as well-rounded individuals.
Life Studies aims to deliver the lessons and challenges needed to support students’ well-being through school and into adulthood. It is aimed at helping youngsters learn how to be active, informed, safe and responsible citizens in modern Britain.
Life Studies includes topics such as Citizenship, life in modern Britain and British values, SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education), PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education), staying safe, keeping healthy, Careers and Examination Preparation. It is supported by the assembly programme and values of the week which tie in to our key themes throughout the year.
In Citizenship and PSHCE students will learn to look at things from different points of view and to understand that often it is not about being right or wrong but about how people see things differently within society. Young people gain knowledge and skills through Citizenship to help them understand and engage with the structure of our democratic society: politics, the economy and the law. Furthermore, Citizenship has many crossover areas with other subjects.
Emotions and our ability to regulate them affect our learning, behaviour and future health, wealth and happiness. Therefore working to understand and manage emotions enhances time management skills, social contact and acceptance of difference, academic results and self-confidence and decrease interrupting, fidgeting, challenging and disruptive behaviour.
Our focus on British values and life in modern Britain is designed to ensure students understand their place in the community, Britain and globally. We progressively look at democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. We aim to challenge preconceptions and stimulate meaningful discussions with and between students to ensure our young people are ready to play their part in modern Britain.
Our focus is on providing the right education to help young people make their own decisions and take responsibility for their lives and communities. Life Studies helps to create a fair, inclusive and cohesive society, through the topics studied. Furthermore, by taking part, we want to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take part and drive change as effective citizens, both as individuals and as communities.
